We've developed a new line following
module based on the GP2S40 sensor.
The LFM-3 is designed to allow a
robot to follow a 3/4" wide
line, either black on white or white
on black. The module is all
through-hole components, making it
simple to assemble.
The Sharp GP2S40 is a small
reflective surface sensor that uses
infrared light to detect surfaces
near it. 3 sensors provide the
ability to accurately detect and
follow a line. The module is
able to detect a line over a wide
range of distance, from about 3mm to
15-20mm. Adjust the height to
fit your design or need.
The 3 outputs
are a variable voltage, ranging from
~0V for black and about ~4.8V for
white. The voltage swing is
sufficient that you could also read
it as a digital signal.
Note: Many of my robots use
the GP2S40 sensors, check out Microbot
to see how well the sensors perform
